I bought a badly rusted, bent and paint chipped SP3 Meccano steam engine on Ebay. When I received it, it was in worse condition than I expected. It had rust all over the top surfaces. I think it must have been left in a shed at a coastal region and settling humidity caused condensation and rust in this pattern. The rust had caused severe pitting in the metal.

The piston had seized in the cylinder. The advert said that the assembly moved freely, that was because the flywheel was stripping on the rod when you turned it!
