PROJECT 7

March 2003

RESTORING 3 MECCANO MAGIC MOTORS

Disassembly

Cleaning and reassembly

The covers were cleaned in caustic soda to remove the paint.

Once the paint was off I rinsed the covers and started to remove the rust.

As there was only light surface rust on all the parts with no pitting, I scrubbed all the parts in

a rust removing solution using steel wool.

Once done I rinsed all parts in detergent and dried them off with a clean rag.

The rust treated gears and spring.

The cleaned covers masked off and ready to be sprayed.

Now is a good time to straighten out any dings and dents before spraying.

All the covers resprayed and ready for reassembly.

Reassembly is pretty straightforward. Place the main spring and all gears into the lower plate.

Fit the top plate over and bend the tabs back into place.

The pulley press fits back onto the shaft. I used my table vice to press it back into place.

The completed motors, as good as new and ready for action!

I resprayed one in the same blue as the blue and gold period as they were available in that color as well.
