RESTORING A WILESCO D365 (OLD SMOKY) STEAM ENGINE
Cleaning and Fixing
Once I had cleaned the steering mount I noticed that it had rusted through in places.
This could be due to the high temperature exhaust steam bearing directly upon it.
I fashioned a backing plate from copper and soldered the outside to fill the holes.
I then filed it flat and smooth.
I fashioned a new chimney from Galvanized steel.
First I modeled a chimney from card board as it is easier to work with.
Next I traced it out on the steel, shaped the steel on a rod and used an epoxy to seal the gap
in the chimney. Once the epoxy dried I sanded it smooth and sprayed.
The epoxy is a steel epoxy and is designed to be used with steel and high temperatures.
The cardboard template is on the left.
The replica chimney. The epoxy still needs to be sanded down.
